Canada’s First Manned Powered Flight

Silver Dart in flightThe Silver Dart was the next machine produced by the Association and was ready to test on 6 December 1908 at Hammondsport, New York. Alexander Graham Bell had the Silver Dart taken to Baddeck to continue the flying experiments. On 23 February 1909, the Silver Dart became the first aircraft to fly in Canada, with pilot McCurdy recognized as the first British subject to complete a controlled flight in the British Commonwealth. The group had achieved their goal of demonstrating controlled flight, and the Aerial Experiment Association was dissolved on 31 March 1909.
