World War II

Russel BannockAs the machine of the Second World War marched on, citizens of Edmonton were finding that their namesake, the 418 (City of Edmonton) Squadron, was becoming the top-scoring unit of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).

The 418 Squadron proved to be among the most proficient units in day and night fighting, producing one of the most impressive records in shooting down the V-1 "Buzz bombs," launched in massive numbers by the Germans to destroy random targets in England.

Two of the best fighter pilots in the RCAF, Russell Bannock and Paul Davoud, commanded the formidable 418 (City of Edmonton) Squadron during WWII.
