Barron and Calgary's Jewish Community

Part of the Order of B'nai B'rith, Jacob Bell Barron was a rather prominent member of the Jewish community in Calgary. B'nai B'rith, which translates as "Children of the Covenant", is an organization dedicated to uniting Jews in service to their community and the world. It was founded by 12 men of German-Jewish descent in October 1843 and continues to thrive today.

J. B. Barron at Jewish BanquetIn 1956, Barron was honoured by the Jewish National Fund of Calgary, taking the form of a Negev Testimonial Dinner.

With the creation of the State of Israel, in 1948, the "Negev Dinner" was also created by the Jewish National Fund to honour outstanding community leaders and significant events in Jewish life. Simultaneously, the "Negev Dinner" was a time to gather support for the Negev desert region of Israel. Initially proceeds from these functions went directly toward the Negev region, but as needs grew, the proceeds were split to accommodate them.
