Historical Overview

An example of early broadcasting. Dr. E.A. Corbett broadcasts from a corner of his office in the Department of Extension. In many ways, the history of CKUA as a station is a history of Edmonton itself. At the time of CKUA's sign-on in 1927, there were but three stations in the city, all fighting over a listenership with few radio receivers. In time, though, Edmonton would become one of the hottest radio markets in the country, encouraged by an ever-growing collection of broadcasting developments.

There has been more than enough mythology to early radio broadcasting in Edmonton. It has been colourful, and along the way, as contentious as the heavyweight boxing match that allowed CKUA's foot in the door of radio licensing.
