Welcome to AlbertaSource.ca, home of the Alberta Online Encyclopedia, a web portal developed by the Heritage Community Foundation to bring Alberta to the world and the world to Alberta. This unique, born-digital resource consists of over 80 purpose-built websites including text, images, audio and video. The sites make learning about the historical, natural, cultural, scientific and technological heritage fun. The Heritage Community Foundation is proud to partner with a range of heritage organizations including museums and archives; the media; professional associations; the Aboriginal, Francophone and other ethnocultural communities; as well individuals in the creation of online learning resources.

The Traditional Use Studies Website explores the history and methodologies for undertaking studies of land use by Aboriginal Peoples. This work involves gathering of information from Elders and other knowledge keepers and creating maps and other documents that make this knowledge accessible. Findings are valuable for a range of purposes from rights protection for Aboriginal Peoples (who conduct the studies), to governments desiring to regulate land use and environmental protection, and industry wishing to exploit resources. Examples are drawn from Alberta, Canada and internationally.

The website is based on more than 50 years of work with Aboriginal communities undertaken by Terry Garvin, author of a popular book titled Carving Faces, Carving Lives:  People of the Boreal Forest. The Edukit is intended to provide a range of information and activities that highlight and promote an understanding of the Aboriginal People who live and work in the Boreal Forest Region of Alberta.

The website allows users to discover the origins and meanings behind place names by situating them in their political, social, economic and cultural context. The dynamic Alberta Geographical Place Names Database allows you to search about 12,000 entries.

In 2005, the Edmonton Art Galley (now the Art Gallery of Alberta) created the exhibition titled THE ROAD: Constructing the Alaska Highway. This web-based exhibition project examines the visual history and lasting impact of the construction of the Highway on northern Canada. The site is a unique opportunity for people in Alberta, and around the world, to learn about the history of western and northern Canada, and the important role that art and artists play in creating and documenting history.
