Marie-Anne Gaboury

Marie-Anne GabouryMarie-Anne Gaboury left her St. Lawrence valley home with her husband Jean Baptiste Lagemodiere. Jean Baptiste worked in the fur trade, and was near Edmonton for about four years. Marie-Anne was the first French-Canadian woman to travel in the west. With much hardship and hard work the couple thrived in the harsh environment. They were friends to traders and Aboriginal people alike. Gaboury and her husband had eight children, of whom one daughter—Julie—became the mother of the renowned Métis leader Louis Riel.

The main street of Edmonton's la Cité francophone is name la Rue Marie-Anne Gaboury.
