Calcification

Calcification occurs in areas where grass vegetation predominates. Grasses return basic materials such as calcium and magnesium to the upper soil layers, thereby maintaining a non-acid, nutrient-rich environment. In addition, fine clay particles do not leach into the subsoil. The resulting soils are referred to as Chernozemic soils. These types of soils dominate the grassland and parkland natural regions of Alberta.
