Background

CKUA muralOn Nov. 21, 2002, CKUA Radio celebrated its 75th birthday, a milestone in Canadian broadcasting for the Edmonton-based station that would become a network. Before finding its current home with the CKUA Radio Foundation, the station had been operated by the University of Alberta, the Government of Alberta, and the Alberta Educational Communications Corporation, better known as ACCESS.

Today, CKUA has 350,000 Alberta listeners weekly through its AM and FM network of 17 transmitters, and is heard via the Internet in 60 countries.

In this background section, we look at the historical evolution of CKUA from its years as Canada’s first educational radio station to its operation as an independent network. Its function as an early creator of radio drama, a purveyor of American programming, and a creative partner with the fledgling Canadian Broadcasting Company network are discussed in the Program Production section. Finally, CKUA’s award-winning programming and the firsts in its broadcasting history are shown in a chapter called Awards and Firsts.

Welcome to CKUA, the little station that could.
