On July 17, 1996, TWA Flight 800,
a Boeing 747 bound for Paris, exploded shortly after takeoff from New
York's Long Island, killing all 230 people on board.
Despite a finding by the U.S. National Transport Safety Board in 2000 that
an explosion of the airplane's center wing tank resulting from ignition of
the flammable fuel/air mixture in the tank was the probable cause of the
crash, alternate theories still abound that have led some observers to
accuse the U.S. government of a cover-up. To these observers, there has
been no final explanation and they still look to an on-board bomb, missile
or another mechanical failure in causing the crash.
The doubts harboured by some news media, military experts, editorialists,
journalists, terrorist watchers and observers of commercial flight have
resulted in a plethora of websites and many books on the subject,
