Montreal doctor Henry Morgentaler
is Canada's best-known abortion advocate. In 1967, he petitioned the
Commons Health and Welfare Committee to repeal the law against abortion.
By 1973, he revealed he had successfully performed more than 5,000
abortions in his career, and testified to the safety and efficacy of
clinical abortions.
His campaign for safe abortions and family planning has resulted in many
court appearances - he was charged with violating article 251 of the
Criminal Code, jailed in 1974, and eventually acquitted - speaking
engagements, and the establishment of a national chain of clinics.
Morgentaler opened a clinic in Edmonton in 1991. Since 1996, when Alberta
Premier Ralph Klein enacted health care reform, the province has funded
abortion through regional health authorities with contracts to hospitals
and private clinics.
