Oral Histories

At the heart of Traditional Use Studies (TUS) are oral histories. It is only through the interviewing of Elders and other knowledge keepers that traditional practice and uses of the land can be determined with any degree of accuracy and authority. This section includes vignettes from oral history interviews.

  • Terry Garvin Oral History Interview - As one of Canada's senior practitioners in the area of TUS, Garvin's experiences in the Boreal Forest Region of Canada provide insights into the history, traditions and culture of Aboriginal communities. The following excerpts are from an oral history interview with Garvin undertaken in 2008 by Dr. Adriana Davies, Executive Director and Editor-in-Chief of the Heritage Community Foundation. David Bates is the videographer and video editor.
  • Elders Oral Histories - This section includes some oral history material from the Aseniwuche Winewak Nation of Canada Traditional Land Use Study. In addition, Elders oral histories can be found on the Elders Voices Website, which was an Aboriginal Centennial Project undertaken by the Heritage Community Foundation with funding support from Alberta Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development (now Alberta Aboriginal Relations).
