Rationale:

It is important that students are able to recognize the link between what factors shape individual and collective identity and participation in traditional activities. In Aboriginal culture participating in dance, ceremonies, sports and recreation has a definite correlation to how individual identity with being Aboriginal. Students will explore traditional Aboriginal activities and analyze how they are related to identity.

Introductory Activity:

Break students into small groups and provide each group with a large sheet of paper. Have the students brainstorm and list possible ways that sport and recreation connect with a cultural identity. How do sport and recreation connect to the concept of nationalism? Have the students flip over their paper and answer the same questions from an Aboriginal perspective. Upon what sports have Aboriginal people had a significant impact? They should also list sports or recreational activities in which Aboriginal people have achieved. Why do they feel this way?
