Alberta at War

Premier William Aberhart assured all Albertans that their province was committed to assisting Great Britain, defending Canada, and preserving democracy.

All across Alberta, evidence of Canada’s participation in the Second World War was apparent. Men (and eventually women) in smart uniforms strolled the streets; marching bands and parades involving members of the military and volunteer groups entertained those who gathered to watch. Albertans were forced to make many adjustments to wartime life. Those who stayed behind on the homefront were busy preparing for the battles to come. There was much to be done to ensure the war effort was a success: establishment of civil defence units, organization of fundraising campaigns, and coping with shortages caused by the rationing of goods. In the end, Albertans did what was necessary to support Canada’s fighting troops overseas. No longer were they a disparate collection of settlers scattered across a vast territory. Albertans became a people at war answering their nation's call to arms.
