The Women's War

The Second World War ushered in significant changes to the role of women in Canadian society. While the home and hearth remained a female domain whole new sectors of society quickly became accessible to women. The human capital required for wartime production necessitated that all able bodied individuals join the work force. Not only were women encouraged to enter the work force, they were actively recruited, and for the first time women were officially called upon to serve their country in the armed forces.

In a time of great peril the women of Canada truly showed their strength and their spirit as one by one they watched as their husbands, sons, fathers, and brothers marched off to battle. They look on as their ‘boys’, their loved ones stepped into the theatre of war, and a future of fear and uncertainty. And yet there was no time for tears, and not a moment for regret, for there was a war to be won. The time for sorrow would come, but at the moment there were great works to be wrought, sacrifices to be made, and burdens enough for all to bear. It was time for the women of Canada to rise up and claim their fair share of the victory that was to come.
