Michif - the Métis Language

French heritage is found in the distinct language of the Métis, Michif. The language uses French nouns with Cree verbs. The number of Michif speakers may have dropped to 1000 in the late 1990s. The Métis Nation of Canada is working to preserve the language. For a Michif pronunciation guide and online Michif lessons, visit the Michif Language Project.
