Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB)

Calgary Real Estate Board The Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB) is one of the largest real estate organizations in the country, representing more than 5000 real estate brokers and agents in 250 firms. CREB covers southwestern Alberta including Calgary, Sundre, High River, Banff, and Canmore.

Founded in 1943, CREB maintains and enforces a strict code of ethics and standards. Their aim is to unite all Calgary REALTORS® so as to provide better real estate service to the public, to give their members an advantage in the industry, to promote sound ethics, and to promote civic development and economic growth in the city. The board was founded by several prominent Calgary REALTORS® like Kenneth Lyle, who headed the successful real estate company Lyle Brothers Inc., and Jack Leslie, who became a long time mayor of Calgary. Members like Roy Wilson, Ken Russell, and Patrick Toole helped steer the organization to its current state of efficiency.

The Calgary Real Estate Board, with its offices at 300 Manning Road in Calgary, provides many services to both REALTORS® and the general public. Their website, www.creb.com provides the public with information on how to hire a REALTOR®, and why it is effective to hire a REALTOR® when buying or selling property. CREB also fields complaints associated with the ethical conduct of their members, and the board is responsible for disciplining them. CREB offers many educational services to its members, including courses for mandatory continuing education, licensing courses and exams, and educational courses for those interested in becoming REALTORS®. One of the board's primary functions is updating www.mls.ca, Canada's multiple listing services website, with listings on property for sale in CREB jurisdictions.

Calgary Real Estate News CREB has two primary publications for public consumption - Calgary Real Estate News (CREN) and Home to Home. Calgary Real Estate News is published in hard copy every Thursday, but the website, www.cren.ca, is updated daily. Operating since 1983, CREN publishes news about the Calgary real estate market, advertisements for REALTORS®, and listings for Calgary and South-central Alberta. Home to Home, with its website at hometohomecalgary.com, is published every four weeks, 13 times a year. The magazine contains in-depth editorials and articles on real estate, as well as MLS statistics and real estate advertisements.

The Calgary Real Estate Board also has its own charitable foundation. The Calgary Real Estate Board Charitable Foundation, at www.hearttohome.org, is dedicated to giving back to the community through volunteer work, member donations, fundraising activities, and community initiatives. Founded in 1987 by CREB's Civic Affairs Committee, the Foundation sponsors diverse charities like AIDS Calgary, The Kids Help Phone, Canadian Blood Services, MADD and The Mustard Seed, distributing over a million dollars worth of aid over the years. One of the Calgary Real Estate Board Charitable Foundation's missions is "to support and contribute to the shelter-related needs of the community [they] serve." In response to an affordable housing crisis in Calgary, in the past few years the Foundation has concentrated its efforts on the Crestwood Affordable Housing Project, a government-charity cooperative project to construct a 60-unit residential complex for low-income Calgarians.
