Art Dixon

Arthur Johnson Dixon, 1919-2007, was born at Windlestone, County Durham, England and came to Canada with his parents in 1928. He was educated at Okotoks, Alberta and during World War Two he moved to Calgary to join the Airforce. While in Calgary in 1944, he married Dorothea J. Evans. Dixon served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940 to 1946. After the war, he operated a hardware store before joining the real estate industry in 1949.

Art Dixon was then active in the insurance and real estate business in Calgary. He began working for Clark Real Estate and Insurance in 1949, before starting his own real estate company in 1956. Dixon Real Estate Services Inc. continues to operate today under Art's eldest son Tom. Art was also active in organized real estate. He was an active member of the Calgary Real Estate Board, on various committees, and in 2005, he was given an honorary lifetime membership of the Board. He was also a founding directory of the Alberta Real Estate Foundation.

Aside from his real estate career, Dixon was an active politician. He was first elected to Alberta Legislature in 1952 and served as an MLA until 1971. Dixon was appointed Deputy Speaker of the Alberta Legislature in 1955 and Speaker in 1963, until 1973.

He received the Order of Canada in 1979 for recognition of his community service. Throughout his life, Art Dixon was a member of many volunteer and service organizations including the Salvation Army and Kiwanis International. He helped found Dream Haven senior's residence, and he was the founder and president of the William Aberhart Historical Society.

Art’s wife Dorothea died before him, and he remarried to Marguerite. When he died on February 5th of 2007, Art left behind his wife Marguerite, two sons and a stepdaughter, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
