The Edmonton Real Estate Board awarded him lifetime membership in 1999. Three years later he continued his active involvement in the industry by serving as the president of the Edmonton REALTORS® Charitable Foundation.

Vander Meulen has been actively involved in his community for several decades. He has served as a board member and president of the Christian Senior Citizens Homes Society of Northern Alberta and was the treasurer for the Edmonton Society for Christian Education.
