Telephone Historical Centre
The Telephone Historic Centre, located in Edmonton, has been in
operation since 1985. It was founded by retirees from the Edmonton
Telephone Corporation who were dedicated to the preservation of
telephone history in Edmonton and the surrounding area. It is
Canada’s largest telecommunications museum. Its purpose is to
collect, preserve, identify, and catalogue artifacts and archival
material related to the history of telecommunications in Edmonton,
and to relate it to the public in an entertaining and educational
manner.
Through its collection of archival resources and artifacts, as
well as interactive displays, the centre has drawn 125,000 visitors
over the last two decades. A large number of these individuals have
been involved with school groups, brought to the site either for
educational field trips or to participate in an array of
curriculum-based programs.
The centre has recently moved from its former home in Old
Strathcona to a new location at the Prince of Wales Armouries. Staff
and volunteers, with guidance from a board of directors, are
developing a more easily accessible Telephone Archive Centre there.
This level of community service would not be possible without the
support of volunteers. In 2001, they contributed over 8,000 hours to
hosting visitors, maintaining exhibits, caring for the artifact
collection, and helping with office administration.
