Telephone Era in Alberta >>
Companies >> Telus Communications
TELUS as a brand name was first used in 1990 after the provincial
government privatized the former Crown Corporation, Alberta
Government Telephones. The name is a composite of
"telecommunications" and "universality."
In 1995, the era of government-owned telecommunications carriers
in Alberta ended when TELUS purchased Ed Tel from the City of
Edmonton for $467 million.
TELUS itself went through a period of reorganization in the West,
thanks to a 1999 merger with BC Tel, the former monopoly service
provider in British Columbia. As a result, TELUS is the largest
telecommunications service provider in Western Canada, and the
second-largest provider in Canada, after Bell Canada.
