Repairmen fixed and refurbished those units rented out by the
phone company. When a subscriber returned a rented telephone, it was
leased to another subscriber only after being examined at the repair
shop.
Modern repairmen are also responsible for pay phone maintenance.
They check electrical components such as circuits and ringers on a
regular basis, fixing these as needed. They are also on the look-out
for damaged cords and housing, which they either replace on-site or
repair back at their shops.
Repairmen have apprentice qualifications with specialized
on-the-job training for this role.
They are not, however, responsible for equipment at the exchange;
those kinds of repairs are carried out by the people who installed
the equipment.
