George Stanton was associated with Alex Taylor—the grandfather of
the Edmonton telephone—in Taylor’s private business. In Alberta
telephone histories, he is variably described as general manager of
the Edmonton & District Telephone Company when it was taken over by
the city in 1904, and as the chief installer of Edmonton Telephones
when it reached its maturity in 1912. According to popular historian
Tony Cashman’s 1972 book, Singing Wires: The Telephone in Alberta,
Stanton was an exceedingly hard worker.
"A heavy man with a heavier moustache," wrote Cashman, "George
loved his work and grumbled at the erosion of the work day from ten
hours to nine and then to eight. Later on he felt even worse about
paid vacations."
