Son of the French-Canadian voyageur Jacques and a Chipewyan woman, François Beaulieu (b.1771- d. 1872) was born in the Far North and knew the entire region extremely well.

He travelled with Alexander Mackenzie on his voyage of 1792-93 to the Pacific Ocean via Bella Coola.

Beaulieu and his wife settled near the Salt River and raised a family, traded in furs and supplied salt to the Hudson’s Bay Company. Once they were old enough, his sons continued his work and brought their furs to the Red River to trade from their home. Beaulieu served as guide to Franklin, Richardson, and Pike.

The Beaulieu family was very influential in the north portion of the province as well as the Northwest Territories.
