The Famous 5 became
well-known for their political achievements, but also for their
writing. Emily Murphy and Nellie McClung wrote several books and
magazine articles about life in the Canadian west and social problems
of their times. Each of the Famous 5 also wrote many letters and
editorials and delivered many public speeches. In addition, authors
and reporters have shared their own and others' experiences with these
women and their times. These first-hand impressions bring to light the
conventions, stereotypes, hardships and dreams so many women in
western Canada shared.
Here we present excerpts from these people's writing and voices. The
Heritage Community Foundation gratefully acknowledges the support of
each publisher who has allowed us to reproduce these excerpts.
