French language newspapers were some of the first commercial news mediums in Canada. Early papers filled a need for regional news and gossip, and many were also used to help encourage the colonization of fertile western lands. French radio arrived after a struggle by a shrinking, minority Franco-Albertan people, and French television is available to most Albertans today.
