Akuinu River

Category : River

In 1920 J. N. Wallace, DLS, wrote: “Akuinu River, name of the Indian tribes south of Chipewyans are called Ethinyew or Inenyew.” The Cree name for the Saulteaux is Nak-aw-ew-iy-i-new, which is likely a version of this name. In 1880, the GSC recorded the name A-kew-i-newsîpî. The AECD notes that the word for “stranger” or “outsider” is ayahciyiniw and was used by the Plains Cree to describe the Blackfoot. The Northern Cree used the word for the Dene Tha’.
