Map of some Chipewyan Place Names

The Chipewyan people have had a strong presence in northeastern Alberta since the arrival of the fur trade and perhaps earlier. Yet, there are very few official place names originating with them. Even names such as Chipewyan Lake or Fort Chipewyan employ the Cree name used to describe this Dene tribe.
