Alberta’s numerous voluntary umbrella organizations
provide a collective voice for the not-for-profit sector.
They promote the value and the important contributions the
voluntary sector gives to our society. Some umbrella
voluntary organizations give individual volunteers special
recognition.
Umbrella organizations strive to provide leadership and
mobilize the resources of the voluntary sector. They enhance
programs, services, operations, and governance. Importantly,
they build the sector’s capacity to advocate and address issues
that have an impact on not-for-profit organizations.
There are 21 Volunteer Centres located throughout
Alberta. A volunteer centre is a nonprofit organization or
program that supports the needs of volunteers, promotes and
builds local volunteering, and connects volunteers with
opportunities to serve in their communities.
