The name of the rural municipality was changed effective February 1998 from “MD of Kneehill No. 48” to “Kneehill County.” The earlier MD of Kneehill was established in 1945 and was named for the nearby Knee Hills. The MD included areas of four former MDs including Carbon, Norquay, Ghost Pine, and Stauffer.
