Category : City

Airdrie station was established on the C&E; line in 1893 and was named for a city in Scotland. The post office opened in 1900. It became a town in 1974 and was formed as a city in 1985. According to the Tourist Guide of Airdrie, Scotland: “There is an Airdrie in Canada founded in 1889 between Edmonton and Calgary, and we have it on good authority that this settlement was named by William Mackenzie, a Scot by birth and a contracting engineer by profession – after one situated a few miles northeast of Glasgow.” William Mackenzie bought land six kilometres north of the Airdrie station in 1895.
