Birch Hills

Category : Hill

The name is apparently a translation of the Cree word waskwai. These hills near Wanham were the principal source of birch bark for the fur traders at Dunvegan. The Fort Dunvegan post journal stated under date of June 15, 1806, that two men were sent off to the Birch Hills for bark. In the 1902 Dominion Land Surveyors' field notes it is referred to as Fairchild's Birch Hills, but changed to Birch Hills in the final report.

Approximately 65 km north-east of Grande Prairie.
