Leduc: Causes and Effects

The Growth of Leduc

Opening day, Leduc No. 1 discovery well, February 13, 1947.The discovery of oil northwest of Leduc in 1947 resulted in accelerated population growth for the community and county of Leduc. In 1941, the population of the community of Leduc was approximately 871 people and in 1951 it grew to 1,842 people. The County of Leduc had approximately 12,526 people living in the surrounding areas.

The discovery of oil also added economic establishments related to oil field servicing and to the accommodation of a growing labour force. Residential construction was stimulated to accompany the rapid growth in population. Leduc became a housing centre for construction workers, maintenance and operational staff. There were also extensive public works projects, such as the construction of water and sewer mains, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and street paving.

The cities of Edmonton and Calgary also experienced enhanced roles as centres for wholesale and retail trade, finance, insurance and real estate.
