Oil Sands Discovery Centre

The Oil Sands Discovery Centre, located in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, presents the history, science and technology of the oil sands industry through exhibits, demonstrations and theatre presentations. The centre is an educational facility committed to increasing public awareness, appreciation and knowledge about the oil sands industry. This is done by presenting and interpreting the history, technology and significance of the industry and its role in the development of Canada.

The Oil Sands Discovery Centre opened on Sept. 6, 1985, as the Fort McMurray Oil Sands Interpretive centre. The Oil Sands Discovery Centre is in the heart of the world's biggest single oil deposit—the Athabasca Oil Sands. The Centre features industrial equipment—a dragline bucket, a 150 tonne heavy hauler with tires three metres high and "Cyrus," an 850 tonne bucketwheel excavator. Discover how oil was formed millions of years ago, perform experiments used by oil sands pioneers, and see how bitumen is extracted and changed into synthetic crude oil.

The centre is a provincial facility, operated and maintained by the Alberta government, Department of Community Development, Historical Resources Division, Historic Sites and Cultural Facilities Branch. The Oil Sands Discovery Centre is located on MacKenzie Boulevard at the corner of Hwy 63, Fort McMurray.
