Forestry Heroes

Sawmills, c.1910.In Alberta, trees are much more than a backyard decoration! Forestry is a very important industry in Alberta, and there are many individuals who have contributed to the industry over the years.

Forestry in Alberta had very interesting beginnings. Spurred on by the growth of the Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.), forestry really began to grow commercially in the 1880s. Forest development grew especially fast in Calgary and surrounding areas, and the Bow River actually served as a major transporter of logs!

The forestry industry was not just about trees, however. The innovation and entrepreneurship of many people shaped the industry into what it is today. In this section, discover more about some of the early pioneers of forestry in Alberta and their contributions!
