Mamie Meardi came to North America from Pesaro in the Marche region of Italy in
1929, when she was 14 years old. Her
father was already working in the mine camp in Cadomin, and
shortly after she arrived, they moved out to their homestead
at Hylo. Her
father was the postmaster and Mamie was his assistant until
she got married. Mrs. Meardi did alright during the
depression since her husband was a foreman making about
$100.00 per month. She had wanted to return to Italy by the
time she was 30 years old, but never did.
The interview was conducted by Giancarlo Grelli for the Dante Alighieri Oral History Project in 1973.
This oral history project was initiated by Sabatino
Roncucci, a founder of the Dante Alighieri Society, for the
purpose of documenting immigration history so that it
could be shared not only with the Italian community but also
the community at large.
