Motions asking the government to make certain documents
public are called motions for returns, and opposition members use them to ask
cabinet ministers for information on potentially controversial issues.
Members may debate motions for returns, after which the Assembly takes a
vote. If the motion passes, that means that the Assembly agrees that the
information should be handed over.
A motion for a return:
Mr. .... moved that an order of the Assembly do issue
for a return showing the amount of money allocated from October 1988 to
March 1, 1992, by the community facility enhancement program by group and by
constituency. (Hansard, June 23, 1992, p. 1568)
This motion, which the Assembly passed, asked the
government for information about a government program.
