Albertans took great pride in the construction of their
new Legislative Assembly Building. On 1 October 1909, a large crowd turned
out to join in the ceremonies as the Governor General of Canada, Earl Grey, laid
the cornerstone. The grounds were decorated with a ceremonial arch bearing
the simple but optimistic motto, "We Reap We Sow".
Hundreds paraded through the arch to hear speeches from politicians and
dignitaries.
As part of the ceremonies, several newspapers, coins and
currency of the day, a set of building plans, a pay list from the project, and a
list of those who supervised construction were placed in the cornerstone as
mementos of the historic event.
