Ontario’s Petroleum Legacy:
The Birth, Evolution and Challenges of a Global Industry
The Heritage Community Foundation is pleased to announce the development of a print and web book that chronicles Ontario’s role in the birth of a global oil industry.
Ontario’s Petroleum Legacy: The Birth, Evolution and Challenges of a Global Industry is authored by petroleum historian Earle Gray with Robert Bott, a veteran energy writer, serving as editor. The book is timed to mark the 150th anniversary of the start of crude oil production in North America at Oil Springs.
In clear, concise and compelling terms, Ontario’s Petroleum Legacy embraces the major elements of Canada’s oil and gas story, including:
- Development by Nova Scotia’s Abraham Gesner of the booming but short-lived U.S. coal-oil-refining industry, which paved the way for the birth of the oil industry.
- The violent boom-and-bust cycles and larger-than-life wildcatters and entrepreneurs who mark the industry’s early history.
- The army of “hard oilers” who came from Oil Springs and nearby Petrolia to drill for oil in every continent except Antarctica.
- Development of the oil and gas industry’s position today as a major strength of the Canadian economy.
- The environmental and climate changes that now confront the industry, the nation and the world.
Ontario’s Petroleum Legacy is essential reading for anyone seeking an understanding of the history behind today’s energy issues.
Published by the Heritage Community Foundation and JuneWarren Publishing, the book will be available in PDF format on the Canada’s Petroleum Heritage website, developed and maintained by the Foundation. An educational trust, the Foundation is one of Canada’s largest web publishers responsible for the creation and hosting of the Alberta Online Encyclopedia – www.albertasource.ca. The portal currently comprises 76 multimedia websites with over 26,000 HTML/PHP pages, over 75,000 images, over 4,000 audio bytes and over 2,000 video bytes. In 2007, the site received over 3.6 million site visits of up to half an hour duration.
