Northern Pygmy Owl

Status

The Northern Pygmy Owl was considered a Status Undetermined species in both the 1991 and 1996 reviews of the Status of Alberta Wildlife. The Northern Pygmy Owl is not known to be at risk of declining to non-viable population levels in the province of Alberta, or at eminent risk across the rest of its range. However, insufficient information currently exists to assign a status designation using existing criteria. The Northern Pygmy Owl is legally designated as a non-game animal and is fully protected under the Alberta Wildlife Act. Such designations protect a species from being killed, possessed, bought or sold without a permit.
