Boreal Highlands Subregion

Highlands LandscapeThe Boreal Highlands Subregion occurs on the sides and tops of plateaus and hill masses within the Central Mixedwood and Wetland Mixedwood subregions. It includes portions of the Cameron Hills, Caribou Mountains, Buffalohead Hills, Birch Mountains, Thickwood Hills, and the highlands around Graham and Peerless lakes, and south of Ft. McMurray. The topography varies from rolling uplands to steep slopes on the flanks of hill masses and plateaus.

Most of the subregion is covered by glacial till in the form of both ground moraine and hummocky moraine. Aeolian dune fields also occupy limited areas.
