The Lower Foothills Climate

The climate in the Lower Foothills Subregion is continental. Mean annual precipitation averages about 465 millimeters, about two-thirds of which falls between May and September. From east to west and from south to north, there are relative increases in precipitation. The typical temperature between May and September ranges from 11-13 degrees Celsius. Summer temperatures are quite cool and much of the precipitation occurs during the growing season. As a result, evapotranspiration deficits are generally near zero during the growing season. Although this subregion is somewhat cooler in summer than the adjacent lower elevation Boreal Forest subregions, it is warmer in winter because it is often not influenced by cold Arctic air masses.
