Trumpeter Swan (trum + pet + er)

The Trumpeter Swan was once common in North America. Because their homes were being destroyed and they were being hunted, they just about disappeared and were put on the endangered species list. Over the last 30 years their numbers have increased again, but they are still listed as a threatened species.

In Alberta they can be found around the lakes and marshes of the Parkland (land between grassland and forests) and Boreal (northern) Natural Regions. They like to build their nests close to the water or on beaver lodges. These swans are completely white except for their black bills and legs. Trumpeter Swans got their name because they have a deep trumpet like-call. The Trumpeter Swan eats a number of different plants.
