Icelandic, Settlement Ice + land + ick

The first people from Iceland to move to Alberta actually came from the United States. They moved from Iceland to places like Manitoba, Wisconsin and North Dakota first. The land in these places was not good for farming, so they moved to what was to become the province of Alberta. Not only was the soil good for farming, but also there was plenty of water and fish here. The town of Markerville, Alberta is one of the longest surviving Icelandic settlements.
