Oyen oi + en

East of Drumheller, on the way to the Saskatchewan border, is the town of Oyen. The town is named for Andrew Oyen, who arrived at Alberta in 1909. He was the first of three brothers from Norway (a country in Europe) to start living in this area. The three brothers tried living in other areas, but eventually they all reunited (got back together) back in one spot. Oyen was built on Andrew’s land. He was well known and people liked him. The community of Oyen continued to grow and in 1965 it became a town.
