This type of mining is done on the prairies. Large machines remove the top layer of soil and rock to expose a coal seam that is almost horizontal (flat). Once the coal is mined, the top layer of soil and rock is replaced. In the early days it was felt that strip-mined coal was not as good as underground coal. The only difference is the way the coal is mined.
