Canadian Northern Railway

This railway is often called the second railway (the CPR was the first) to go across the whole country. This was made possible in 1899 when two small sections of track in Manitoba, used for grain transport, were added to the main line. At this time you could ride the railway from Montreal to Vancouver. The CNR had money problems during 1914 because of construction costs and the war. In 1917 the Canadian government decided to add the CNR to the government railway called Canadian Government Railways (CGR). The new railway was then called the Canadian National Railway in 1918.
