Grand Rapids

The Grand Rapids are in Alberta on the Athabasca River between Athabasca and Fort McMurray. The rapids are made of huge rocks that stretch across the river from side to side, making travel on the river dangerous. During the fur trade, the Athabasca River became the Hudson's Bay Company's main river route to the north and the Grand Rapids were the greatest obstacle on it. Today the rapids can only be approached by boat or aircraft.
