The Long-billed Curlew is a large shore bird with a long downward-curving bill (mouth). In Alberta the Curlew is in danger of dying out, so it has been put on a list of animals that are at risk. They like to build their nests in open areas with some trees and shrubs. Females only lay one egg a year and defend it by faking an injury to lead the danger away. Animals that like to eat Curlew eggs include Coyotes, Badgers, Hawks, and Bull snakes. Curlews eat mostly grasshoppers! Long-billed Curlews are migratory birds. This means that at the end of summer they leave Alberta and go somewhere warmer for the winter.
