Northern Long-eared Bat

The Northern Long-eared Bat is found in many areas of Canada. This type of bat has two homes: a winter home for sleeping and a summer home for resting and gathering food. The Northern Long-eared Bat likes to hibernate (sleep) in caves or empty mines during the cold winter months. During the summer they rest in cracks behind peeling bark or in holes of dead trees.

The Northern Long-eared Bat can live as long as 19 years in the wild. Like all other bats in Canada, the Long-eared Bat only eats insects. Their favourites are moths, beetles, black flies, and mosquitoes.

North West Cattle Company Fred Stimson ran the North West Cattle Company from 1881 to 1902 in the Calgary area. As Stimson slowly added buildings, corrals and fences the North West Cattle Company soon became the Bar U Ranch, one of the most successful ranches in Alberta’s history. From 1902 – 1925 the Ranch became famous for breeding excellent cows and horses while under the direction of George Lane and his helpers.
