In an effort to recognize female nation builders, on
October 13, 2004, the Bank of Canada will release a new $50 bill
that will feature an image of Alberta’s Famous 5 and
Quebec’s Therese Casgrain.
The release of the bill coincides with the 75 anniversary
of the well-known Persons’ Case and will serve Canadians by
reminding them of these significant figures from their
history, often forgotten despite their obvious effect on
present day Canadian culture.
The new $50 bill was championed by the Famous 5
Foundation, a non-profit educational foundation created in
1997 to teach a new generation of Canadians about the five
women from Alberta who fought and changed Canadian policy to
allow women to participate in every level of public life.
The leadership of the Famous 5 has given birth to a new
generation of leaders who have worked to make it possible
for the remarkable example of these five women from Alberta
to be understood and drawn upon for many years in the
future. |
